"I will be taking a particular interest in how the UK Climate Change Bill (which will set down binding targets for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions for the entire UK) will fit together with the proposed Scottish Climate Change Bill which will deal with those aspects of climate change policy which are devolved to Scotland. The Draft Climate Change Bill (Joint Committee) has powers to send for persons, papers and records; appoint special advisers; and will report to both Houses of Parliament on the draft Bill by the 13th July 2007. Mark has a strong record on environmental issues. Mark is a currently a member of the Environmental Audit Committee and achieved legislative success with his own ‘Private Members Bill’ last year which included measures to promote renewable energy, energy efficiency and community energy. He was awarded a prestigious House of Commons award by the Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group for his work in promoting renewable energy. Mark also took up the 25/5 challenge to cut his carbon emissions by 25% over 5 years. Mark said: “The Climate Change Bill owes a lot to the massive public campaign last year for such a law, and I hope that the committee will make a real effort to try and engage with the many members of the public, up and down the country, who are concerned about this issue. |
