Edinburgh North & Leith MP, Mark Lazarowicz, is backing a call for further legislation on climate change to be introduced to Westminster.

Mr Lazarowicz, whose Private Members Bill on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy was recently passed by Parliament, is one of 380 MPs who are now backing Friends of the Earths The Big Ask campaign, which calls for annual year on year cuts of climate change emissions.

Adding his support to the campaign Mr Lazarowicz said

“My Private Members’ Bill on Climate Change and Sustainable Energy can hopefully play a significant role in promoting small-scale renewable energy, and in turn cut carbon dioxide.  However, we face a massive task in reducing carbon emissions and attempting to face-off the worst effects of climate change.  That’s why I’m backing Friends of the Earths campaign for a climate change bill.”

“We need radical, long-term action to ensure that the UK plays its part in keeping global temperatures stable.  It is a Big Ask for government, for business, and for individual households, but a law which commits the UK to steadily reduce its carbon emissions will greatly benefit our environment.”

Friends of the Earth Scotland Chief Executive, Duncan McLaren added:

“Climate change is a big problem but the good news is we know how to solve it.  A climate law will give government and business the framework they need to put the solutions to climate change into practice.  With the support of Mark Lazarowicz and hundreds of other MPs who are backing The Big Ask campaign we are a step closer to getting this law introduced.”
