KEEP UP THE PRESSURE TO HELP MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

One year on from the G8 at Gleneagles local MP, Mark Lazarowicz, is calling on G8 to deliver on the commitments made at last years summit.

As the G8 sets to reconvene in St Petersburg this month the Edinburgh North & Leith MP has launched a petition designed to keep the pressure on the G8 leaders.  Mr Lazarowicz intends to present his petition to International Development Secretary, Hilary Benn MP, and hopes it will further demonstrate the people of Edinburgh’s support for the aims of Make Poverty History campaign.

Launching his petition Mr Lazarowicz said

“Last year over 200,000 people marched through the streets of Edinburgh with a simple message.  We wanted to help Make Poverty History and deliver justice for the worlds poor.”

“We’ve come a long way on this issue, but there is so much more to do.  In Gleneagles the G8 leaders agreed to increase aid to $130 billion by 2010, double aid to Africa, and provide debt cancellation for up to 43 countries.

I’m extremely proud that the UK government was at the forefront of these moves.”

“However, as the G8 leaders meet in Russia this month I think it is vital that we reinforce our message.  I hope people in Edinburgh North & Leith will sign this petition calling on all G8 nations to follow the UK’s lead and ensure that the commitments made at Gleneagles in 2005 on aid, debt, and trade, are implemented in full.”
